Gold Coast Properties
“The Gold Coast” refers to a stretch of expensive lakefront property owned by the city’s wealthiest residents. The inception of the Gold Coast began in the late 1800’s as the Astor Street District. The original Astor Street District was named after John Jacob Astor, a well respected citizen with several achievements and his name branded the neighborhood as a status of wealth which remains true today.
Today’s Gold Coast incorporates this original district and extends beyond it. It is roughly bounded by North Avenue, Lake Shore Drive, Oak Street, and Chicago Avenue. Landscaped walkways, towering condominiums, brown- and greystone residences, topped with rooftop patios and penthouse suites, follow the curve of Lake Michigan’s shoreline, which gives way to North Avenue Beach, accessible from several under passes. The Gold Coast has served as home to some of most affluent Americans including: Hugh Hefner, Cyrus McCormick’s, and Potter Palmer.
