In the week ahead, Chicago will host celebrations of some of the greatest things in the whole world: bacon, Tom Hanks, Star Wars, and old Hollywood fashion… among others. So grab your calendar and your besties to figure out which of these awesome events make your list.

April 5-6 at UIC Forum

For those who worship at the altar of salt-cured pork, this bacon-centric event is not to be missed. You can expect a sampling of small plates from acclaimed local chefs and boozy treats inspired by the savory superstar. Visitors have the choice of three different sessions, each one featuring different chefs and delicious dishes. Check out the full schedule to choose the menu that makes your mouth water.

International Tom Hanks Day

April 6 at The Chop Shop

This may seem like a joke, but it’s an honest-to-goodness celebration of the nicest man in Hollywood. The event consists of screenings of some of his many films and a raffle of items signed by Forest Gump himself. If you arrive early, you can even try requesting your favorite movie to be included in the day’s screenings. And just like Hanks himself, the event does good for others – all proceeds will benefit his favorite charity, Lifeline Energy.

Chicago Market for Makers

April 6-7 at Artifact Events

When it comes to special gifts for ourselves and the ones we love, unique handmade goods tend to be some of the most treasured. This market, which is new to Chicago this year, is the perfect place to browse beautiful, curated items in jewelry, home décor, fashion, art, food and more, all  from local makers. Your $7 ticket gets you a free tote bag, access to several cool photo walls and a free DIY flower crown station.

Sundays Are for Plants with Plant Shop Chicago

April 7 at The Hoxton

Varying levels of green and black thumbs alike are welcome at this special show. Visitors will be able to purchase a wide variety of beautiful, live plants while they sip yummy botanical cocktails and groove out with a DJ set from LizAnne Cook. If you’re bored of your current plant selection, there will also be a swap – bring healthy, live plants to trade for something new.

Silver Screen to Mainstream: American Fashion in the 1930s and ’40s

April 8 – January 21 at the Chicago History Museum

No matter how many decades pass, it seems that the styles of the 30s and 40s will forever hold a special place in the heart of fashion lovers. This new exhibit will feature thirty, historical garments from that period designed by the likes of Channel, Valentina, Howard Greer and more. The overriding theme of the show is the influence that Hollywood fashion had on average people during a tumultuous time in our country’s history.

Taste of Iceland

April 11-14 at Various Locations

Iceland has been one of the hottest travel destinations in the world in the last several years. For those who want to reminisce on a beautiful trip or experience the culture without the plane ticket, this is a great option. Various events throughout the city will highlight the country’s cuisine, music, literature and film.

Star Wars Celebration

April 11-14 at McCormick Place

This biennial event happens in a different city every two years, so Chicago Star Wars lovers should feel very lucky to be hosting this year. The giant convention will feature some of the stars of the recent movies, cosplay competitions, Jedi-themed improv from Second City, and all the memorabilia you could ever want to add to your collection.
