North Center, Chicago
North Center has perhaps the least imaginative name in a city that celebrates its colorful neighborhood nicknames (like Bucktown or Pill Hill, for example). Geographically, however, it's pretty accurate as the neighborhood is located at the center of the north side, give or take a block or two. Figuratively, you could say that this area is also the commercial and residential center of the north side, but you might get an argument from residents of adjacent neighborhoods. North Center does have many attractions in terms of shopping, dining and night life. There are also good schools, great homes and plenty of transportation options.
North Center has many great bars and restaurants branching out from the five-way intersection of Damen, Irving Park and Lincoln Avenue. Western Avenue is a busy thoroughfare and commercial strip that provides easy access by car to other destinations in the city. Lincoln Square lies directly to the north across Montrose, as does Welles Park and the Conrad Sulzer Public Library. It's just a short walk for residents to enjoy the attractions in Lincoln Square or in nearby Roscoe Village to the south.
The expansive 55 acres of Horner Park lie across the river from North Center. Horner Park has a field house, basketball courts and no less than nine softball fields, and there's still plenty of open space for soccer and football games. Lane Tech College Prep High School is located just to the south of North Center's southern border of Addison. This selective enrollment school attracts a diverse group of college-bound students from all over the city. Lane Tech also has an academic center for 7th and 8th graders. Just down Addison Street is another college prep facility, Gordon Tech, a Catholic high school with strong ties to the surrounding neighborhood.
Many of the neighborhood's old warehouses and factories have been converted into housing featuring a mix of both condominiums and rental units. Late 19th and early 20th Century architecture remain a strong theme in the North Center with two and three flat buildings lining the tree-lined side streets. Single family homes are also in ready supply and townhouses and other new construction housing can be found along Irving Park Road. For those who want to be at the center of a vibrant neighborhood, North Center will put you there.
